What is foster care?

Foster care provides temporary care for children and youth who are not able to live with their biological parents. When parents are unable, unwilling or unfit to care for a child, the child must be placed in a safe place.

Facts

  • In America, approximately 800,000 children every year come in contact with the foster care system.

  • On average, children remain in state care for nearly two years

  • In 2015, more than 20,000 young people aged out of foster care without permanent families.

  • There were 4 million reports of child maltreatment in the United States involving more than seven million children.

  • May is National Foster Care Month

  • 55 percent of foster children have had three or more placements.

  • Former foster youth are more likely to develop an alcohol or drug dependency.

  • 1 in 184 children are in the foster system

  • More than 23,000 children will age out of the US foster care system every year.

  • After reaching the age of 18, 20% of the children who were in foster care will become instantly homeless.
